What is colposcopy?

Colposcopy is the procedure where the cervix (neck of the womb) is examined through a binocular microscope. This helps to inspect the cervix in further detail and ascertain changes that could give rise to the abnormal cells that have been suggested in your smear test. A combination of smear test and colposcopic examination helps the gynaecologist with the expertise in this area to perform necessary tests or treatment. A biopsy can be obtained while inspecting the cervix under colposcopy. A loop excision called in the UK as LLETZ or in North America as LEEP to remove the abnormal area. Ideally this treatment should be successful in 9 out of 10 times.

A colposcopy examination is indicated for the following reasons:

  • Abnormal smear or positive smear

  • Repeated inadequate smear report

  • Bleeding after intercourse

  • If your GP has any concern of the cervix

  • Suspicion of any abnormality noted by the nurse or GP during obtaining a smear

  • Persistent vaginal discharge

  • Bleeding in between periods

  • Women who has transplants or on immunosuppressive drugs
